As promised, I am back with a really good project for ya’ll today! It all started at our neighborhood Goodwill. I had a few minutes to kill so I went in. It is my habit to make a beeline straight to the furniture section of the store and sure enough there was an antique Empire dresser……….in need of repair……… for $15 bucks ya’ll! Once the nice guys at the GW loaded the dresser up in my Nissan everything went to absolute crap . As I watched them pick up the dresser I could see the side of the dresser begin to separate and it went on from there.
See that black strap ya’ll? That was what’s holding this Empire dresser together while I sand the old finish off the top.
And oh what a top it became……..
Next up in the chain of flaws that was this dresser…….. who in hell would put a modern lock in to an Antique dresser for crying tears in a bucket??????
We got it out alright but it was not at all easy. There was a metal plate on the back of the actual lock. Big Daddy used a flat head screwdriver to pry that plate off and the lock mechanism just fell out. To fill the hole that was left we picked up a 3/4″ wood dowel, cut it to size and tapped it in. It, however was not level or smooth. We used the Mohawk epoxy to fill around the hole . When the epoxy was all dried, Big Daddy sanded it smooth.
And here she is!
Ya’ll I am so happy with this piece!
The paint color was custom. And by custom I mean that I mixed up several greens that I just had little bits of. To darken it up I did add black to the mix. Now the color is a deep olive green
It was tons,TONS of work but just look at her now!
So let’s talk about the sealer on this piece.
General Finishes Arm -R -Seal is hands down the best and easiest sealing product I have ever come across. I apply 3 coats on each piece, letting each coat dry before the next is put on. I also sand the top lightly with a fine sanding sponge in between coats.
Here’s the link to those knobs. I just love them and I have used them on several projects. They are just the right amount of bling!
I thought the drawer paper was perfect given the olive and natural elements in the dresser’s design . I also thing the black background gives it a really cool pop!
And there’s one more thing………..
It has a key!
Enjoy your Sunday friends!
