When it comes to wood stain it is no secret that my chosen brand is Minwax. It is readily available , cost effective, and SUPER easy to apply. I keep a good supply on hand around here of the colors that I go to the most often. Jacobean, Honey and Walnut are the ones I used the most……… til last weekend.
This stain is Minwax Slate.
I can promise ya’ll it will be a frequent flyer on this blog.
This solid oak side table was $10 at my local Goodwill :)))))
I had already sanded the old finish off the top and the drawer front and I was dying to crack open the can of Slate stain I had grabbed at Lowes . Now, Oak is kinda weird. It can be white or red or SUPER red, depending on the tree. This particular table top turned out to be white.
I alway wipe on my stains using a soft cotton rag, with the grain of the wood. I make sure I have the the entire surface covered but not overly saturated. I let the stain sit for about 15 minutes and then wipe any excess off with a dry paper towel. I apply the poly the same way with a cotton cloth, 24 hours after the stain was applied.
For the drawer liner I chose a cream peel and stick wallpaper that is quieter than my usual papers. I did this because this Bee paper is soft and serene , letting the wood be the focal point. The bees are a metallic silver. I love the subtle shimmer when you open the drawer. You can find the link to the bee paper here.
The body of this piece is painted in Urban Bronze mixed in Valspar Cabinet and Furniture paint. It’s a really warm gray, no blue tones this color. This Valspar paint is the most durable paint I have ever used.
Here’s the link to the drawer pull as well.
Ya’ll I’m pretty obsessed with this stain color. I’d like to try it out on some other woods, pine, mahogany maple…….
The list goes on 🙂
Have a great weekend !

Love this stain color! The gray gives it such depth yet keeps the overall appearance lighter than the darker tones. Can’t wait to see more pieces with Slate.

I actually have a 5-foot farm table (not an old piece, but has nice, classic lines) with a natural wood top that I want to use as a work table. It needs to be sanded and re-stained (and the solid white base and legs need to be painted a nice grayish-taupe, I think). Slate would be a good choice if I (ever) get around to tackling it when it warms up here in the Northeast.
