It has been a while since I actually voluntarily picked up a paint brush.
Even longer since I actually, again voluntarily thought I might paint a piece of furniture to take down to my shop. I have walked the floors in this house for weeks wondering if I would EVER get the itch to turn castoff junk in to something useful again. Big Daddy has been very gentle and patient with me but our garage has multiple pieces of furniture in various stages of not finished. So last weekend I MADE myself pick a piece and just gut it out.
Turns out……. I had a a really good time!
I bought this BIG, heave solid maple dresser for $40 from a very nice guy on Facebook Marketplace. When I got to his house I slid my hand across the top of the dresser…….. and felt laminate. I was just about to walk out when he asked If I had ever removed laminate myself. For anyone on God’s green earth who wants to know?
That was a BIG FAT NO.
Thirty minutes later…… my answer would have been different.
This is what it looks like when you peel a sheet of laminate off of solid maple.
A BIG FAT MESS.
Honest to God all I knew to do was start sanding and see what would happen.
It turned out so pretty!
I thought I had just thrown forty bucks out a car window or worse. The thing that surprised me the most was that the top was actually good grade of wood.
All of the matte black hardware I found on Amazon.
The knobs can be found here as well.
Ya’ll Know me and Black & White.
I have come to know that I really love the combination of black, white and warm wood tones. It is simple, beautiful and timeless.
The actual body of the piece is painted in 3 coats of General Finishes Lamp Black. All of the natural parts were stained in Minwax Provincial stain and sealed with Howards Feed & Wax. The drawer are lined in this Wallpaper can be found with this link.
Have a great weekend ya’ll!

Simply stunning. You have such a wonderful ability to turn what looks like junk into something this lovely.

It’s so striking…and amazing how well the top was revived! I’m not necessarily a huge fan of black, but it works very well on this piece. Nice job, as always.

Oh, and I just realized the illustration is a quail. I hadn’t seen any in person (that I can recall), and never near my home which backs to woods, but a small covey appeared one morning day in September last year and wandered under a cedar tree on my lawn. They were fascinating to watch!

Thank you so much Leslie! I hope you are doing well. Nobody on the face of the earth was more surprised than me when that top turned out beautifully 😳
