Well………. if it is the bottom half, you’ve got yourself a buffet 🙂
So I’ve had a china cabinet out in The Hell Hole for a while. Like a long while. So long I can’t even remember when I got it or where the before photo is. I do, however remember that I got it from a lovely young lady . As china cabinets go, they are heavy as hell. In my particular garage the Heavy As Hell stuff goes straight to be back and is obviously the most difficult to be excavated . Well ya’ll, yesterday was the the day this piece got a make over.
Half of it, anyway……..
The truly sad part about this is I can’t find the original hardware :((((( And I looked all over the place. This is another case where a good hardware hoard came is quite handy . There’s a lot going on with this piece so the antique brass I chose works well. I am relatively sure the original hardware was the same finish. I painted this piece in General Finishes Empire Gray chalk paint, which has been discontinued, but GF’s had recently added the color to their milk paint line. It is a lovely, warm ,light to medium gray. No blue in this one.
I love these little flatware drawers !
Here’s the link to the paper:
The top is stained with Rustoleum wood stain in Dark Walnut and sealed with 3 coats Minwax poly. I mainly worked on this one outside and in the garage, neither of which is ideal. I had to lightly sand the top between coats due to the grain raising due to the humidity I am pretty sure. When I’m working in the house that is rarely a problem.
Pretty pleased with this one !
I’m not at all bragging. Good paint does all the work.

Beautifully done. You must have worked very hard in this heat and humidity. How does humidity affect the stain’s drying time? Here in Michigan, it is so hot and uncomfortable. Have you ever used a stripper? I have a wonderful corner cabinet but it has two coats of white oil base paint on it. Where do I start? I want to paint it a linen color. Suggestions, please.

Thank you! My stripper of choice is citristrip. It does most of the work for you. It smells like oranges and bubbles the paint up, you just scrape up with a plastic scraper. It neutralizes with mineral spirits. Heat and humidity affect drying and curing times plus they can cause poly to gunk up. Finishing is better in a dry, climate controlled space.

Gorgeous! I think this is one of my favorite pieces. You said gray, but it looks cream colored to me. How long did it take from start to finish?

About 8 hours total
