One of the things I love about refinishing castoff furniture is that I have met some of the nicest people along the way. When I went to pick up today’s victim the lady that was selling it was a nice as could be. I actually stayed behind for a bit and enjoyed talking to her about my process of painting and refinishing furniture .
This is the photo from the Marketplace ad.
I used to not like these little desks at all. I called them Halfers. To me they had some sort of identity crisis: Half desk, half dresser. I avoided them no matter the price. Now? You better believe I am kicking my butt for that. This thing is in great shape. I almost never get this lucky.
Lord…….this maple top!
The second I started sanding the original finish off I knew I had hold of something amazing. The woodgrain is gorgeous ! I sanded the top with 80 grit sanding disks until I had the old finish off, then 120 grit this the top was smooth as silk. The stain is Minwax Jacobean, one application only so it wasn’t too dark. I would have hated to miss any of the details in the wood grain. Three clear coats on the top with Minwax Poly in satin finish and it was done.
See what I mean?
I mentioned on Instagram that Covid 19 has decimated my drawer hardware hoard ya’ll. I am now picking colors for my furniture based on what hardware I have to be able to finish the piece. It really paid off on this piece because I was thinking black & white the entire drive home the day I got this desk. It payed off because I had both the knobs and the label pulls left over from previous pieces. Plus, I love to mix hardware!
Big Daddy thinks I’m nuts, but I do it wherever I can.
And the surprise in the drawers?

I love the fern paper. Your furniture always looks amazing. But why did you reverse the top and bottom drawers? Do you have a good online source for knobs?
monkeytails66@gmail.com says
Hi Nancy :). Thank you ! I really have now good online source for knobs and I’m flip pin’ out. Here in NC they have relaxed our restrictions a bit and Hobby Lobby was open this week but I’m still leery of Public, you know? The drawer order was random.
