On more than a handful of occasions I have gone to someones home to pick up a piece of furniture and that piece was in way, way worse shape than it looked like in the photos that got my attention in the first place. Now everything I drag home in terms of furniture is beat up, at least a little bit. That’s a given. So I’m not walking in to this deal expecting a Rembrandt. The mistake I made was not expressing that this sale would be a game time decision . This means that I decide if it’s a sale when I look the piece over really, really good.
We are doing things in reverse today………
So all’s well that ends well ya’ll 🙂
The lady that was selling this desk was sweet as could be ! She also had a darling Himalayan cat that was as friendly as they get. I saw all of the flaws in this desk immediately but I made the conscious decision to overlook them because of the lady and cat involved. I don’t recommend you make a habit of this ya’ll. My heart does not understand that most of the time…….
This is a vintage Ethan Allen piece, the first one I have ever refinished. It is solid pine and was beat all to hell. I ended up sanding the entire thing with my orbital to smooth out all the big nicks and gouges.
It was a big pain in the ass but I think it paid off 🙂
The brushed nickel knobs and cup pulls were all Big Daddy’s idea. I had already resigned myself to having to brave our Hobby Lobby to find some hardware for this desk when he made the comment about trying brushed nickel, so off I shot to rifle through what’s left of my once amazing hardware hoard. So today you are now looking at every drop of brushed nickel hardware that was in that hoard. Good thing this was all I needed, huh?
Five 3 inch cup pulls and two knobs………
I wrote last week about my issue with Fusion Mineral paint’s grays and their propensity to pull blue. This desk is painted in General Finishes Perfect Gray……..and it is just that! Perfect . I can not remember how long it’s been since I’ve painted with any of GF’s products but this color has made me want to use it more than I have been in months. Also? Perfect gray is perfect for a dark wood top! It took me three coats of the paint to achieve the saturation and coverage that I wanted. It was definitely worth the work.
Because I only had two of the oval brushed nickel knobs I chose to use the only remaining cup pull on a drawer that originally had two knobs. I filled and sanded the original holes and got Big Daddy to drill the new 3″ on center holes for the new cup pull. I don’t know how to work a drill . Moreover, Big Daddy is adamantly against me learning. He says it has a lot to do with the fact I am covered in bruises from my everyday life.
Whatever Weirdo………
For the drawers I chose a gray, sort of abstract paper called Seeds from Society6. I love the linen weave the paper has. YA’ll. I am off the deep end with these papers. My breakfast area looks like a map store, brown cardboard tubes everywhere! I am including the link to the paper, but if you order it you are own your own :))))
So here is the before photo that was in the FB Marketplace ad:
And after.
Enjoy your week!

Love it, love it, love it! I said so on your IG page, and I’ll say it here. The sheen on the paint is so pretty! Did you wax after paining? I’m afraid if your shop was in Missouri, I would be your best customer! Keep posting, and I’ll keep reading.

Paige – the desk looks amazing! Love the grey color and the hardware. You have a great eye for knowing exactly what will be the perfect colors and for choosing the perfect hardware – ok I have to give credit to Big Daddy for his help with hardware THIS time! I thoroughly enjoy your blog and all of your makeovers! Wish I lived close enough to shop in booth!
