Several, several weeks ago I met a very nice young lady at a house she was renovating to pick up an old desk (her words) that she had for sale on FB Marketplace for a great price. The piece had been in the house when she and her husband bought the house along with various other things and construction materials.
Here’s the Marketplace photo:
And I new exactly what I want to do with this as soon as I got it home :)))))
Ya’ll this is one of Fusion Mineral Paints’s newest colors called French Eggshell!
It is a soft light French blue, bordering on aqua and it is just gorgeous! I had contacted my local retailer to ask her what she had in stock and she sent photos of this color and and I could not get there fast enough. For a light color I found that this light French blue covers really well . As you can see from the before shot this piece started out quite dark so this was a good test for coverage as well as any bleeding………which there was none :)))))
The tops on these are amazing!
They were made out of a $10 shelf board from Lowes. The cutting area at my Lowes was down the day I was in there so I asked my neighbor Mark if he would please cut them for me and he did a perfect job ! I did sand down every surface on each new top until they were nice and smooth before I stained both sides and all the edges with Minwax Dark Walnut . The next day I applied 3 coats of poly making sure to let each coat dry thoroughly before the next one went on. The last thing that gets done is to attach each top to the base. This is done from underneath with the drawers removed using the existing screw holes that held the original top on. No new holes need to be drilled. You do however need to watch the length of the screws you use or you will go right through that new top before you know it and you will use every cuss word you ever heard plus make up several on your own.
Fact people.
All knobs are from Hobby Lobby.
I hope ya’ll are enjoying your weekend!

That is such a lovely color. I have a question for you. In the photo, on the right side of the piece there appears to be an uneven finish.
Now for my problem. i value your opinion since you have so much experience with refinishing. I sanded a small dresser and painted it with a sponge brush and two coats of a matte black finish. I can’t tell if my shadowing is caused by my sanding or my painting. The piece appears to have light shadows (I don’t know how else to explain this) all over the sides of the piece. Did I sand too much? Should I have used a primer?

Hi Nancy
I shoot my photos next to our French doors. The area you are referring to is from the light through those doors. I think your problem is from the sanding based on your description.

You have encouraged me to paint a light pine sofa table I have had for more years than I can remember, and I think it turned out really well. I painted it a light blue/gray latex paint in satin, then put a couple coats of poly on it, and I am thrilled with it. Wish I could attach pictures in this comment. Thanks for all your posts, I love your blog.
