I have a pretty set capsule color pallet (to coin a current phrase ) for the pieces of furniture that I paint.
Whites & Creams
Navy to Aqua Blues
Black
Grays that do not pull Blue
Greens that occur in nature
Ya’ll get the idea.
All of theses are either neutral or blend well in a neutral environment. In other words? My own home. One of my very early and still in play business models was that I would not paint anything that I wouldn’t have in my own home. In plain English? My very own taste & style. Why? Simply because if a particular piece of furniture did not sell and I got stuck with it I could blend it seamlessly in to my home. Not a bad idea in anyone’s book.
Now I have told ya’ll that story to tell ya’ll this one:
I got this sweet albeit beat up desk from an absolutely LOVELY bed & breakfast in Hendersonville, N.C. that is call The Charleston Inn. FYI: If you are in need of lodging in that area, do go and check it out!
All the way home with the desk in the back of my Jeep, my crazy little head was all about, ‘Girl you paid too much for this one ! And you still have knobs to buy…’ And that conversation lasted right up until I painted the very first stroke of my paintbrush on this particular piece.
I never heard that voice of doubt again on this piece.
I NEVER paint red ya’ll. I like red I just no longer use it in my own home. This is Dixie Belle Barn Red and it is so gorgeous. It is a bright tomato red and the coverage is flawless.
The knobs came from Joann’s craft store.
There were $6 each but I had two 50% off coupons making them $3 each. I love a $2 knob but these are big and beautiful and also have a chrome backplate.
My brain is already turning about maybe painting a few pieces in Barn Red when I go to style my shop for the Christmas season :))))
After I sanded the desk’s top down I re stained it in Minwax Dark Walnut and sealed everything with there poly in a satin finish.
This one is a pretty special piece in a very special red.
I’m really glad I stuck my neck out on it!
Here’s three more knobs that I also considered for this project:
. .
I’ve go them all saved off for future projects !
Enjoy your weekend!

This is beautiful! Your paint is so smooth and perfect! I never can get rid of the brushstrokes in the paint…how do you get yours so perfect?

Nice to see you Leah! Most of the paints I use self level, so that helps. I usually paint two coats and lightly sand in between coats which cuts down on brush marks.

“…to coin a current phrase…” I laughed out loud when I read this! What a great idea to bring in some pieces for your shop at Christmas in this beautiful red!! I’m with you – not big on red in my house except for a bolt of beautiful red chintz that stole my heart. But a lot of people do like in their homes… so once again you have a winner!! I was shocked when I saw it on Instagram – but it really is beautiful!

Thank you Kristine. Nobody was more shocked that me! Red was my Mama’s color so I thought about her and smiled a big smile when I was done.
