Out of all the furniture that has passed through my hands on it’s way to my shop there is one type that I would say is the rarest……..matching side tables.
Crazy, I know.
Oh I find them. They are just out of my price range, like way out of it. I feel like I am constantly typing end table pair in to every search engine from Craigslist to Offerup. So about two weeks ago I typed it in to Facebook Marketplace and got lucky!
These two lovelies popped up :)))))
Nice legs.
And written in the drawer?
Broyhill
They are oak and solid as a rock!
Plus, and this is really a bonus they had nice original pulls. At this point I probable shoulda stopped and bought a lottery ticket cause it was shaping up to my my day.
The tops sanded down pretty well except right here in those cute but hateful little corners.
I guess you can’t have everything……
From the minute I saw them FB Marketplace ad I had black on the brain. And I could not get it out of my crazy little head. I really didn’t try either. General Finishes Lamp Black milk paint is the Little Black Dress of the paint world.
The original hardware was pretty green and crusty so I tried a new to me product for cleaning brass, Wright’s Brass Polish. I removed the hardware from the drawers and put it in a ceramic bowl. Next I covered it with the stuff and walked away for about 30 minutes ……… mostly because the smell is terrible. (Do not breathe it or be careless with it.) Then I just rinsed them in warm water really well and let the air dry.
I stained the tops with that custom mix again, 50% Minwax Jacobean, 25% Classic Gray and 50% Weathered Oak. I am so in love with this mix y’all! It is a warm dark stain that pulls gray if that makes any sense at all.
Lots of really nice details on these two!
Classics always age well.
I made sure that I unstacked this before I came up to bed tonight.
Lily would have been swinging on these two tables like the monkey bars, God bless’er.

Brilliant! I have had sitting in storage a pair of very nice speckled oak end tables with very similar lines to yours that were in my late mom’s home for years. Well made of solid wood, but the top surface has gotten a bit scratched up over the years, so I’ve known I wanted to sand and stain the tops and paint the rest when the weather gets warmer here in NY. I had been thinking a rich barn red, but am loving the impact of your soft almost grey-ish stain and black base approach. They’re perfect – thanks for sharing!

Leslie do it! Especially if they were your Mama’s plus have you priced end table pairs lately?
Leslile says
Ha! I haven’t priced any end table pairs lately as I have so much furniture in storage I hadn’t needed the end tables, but I hung onto them as I thought they might be useful at some point. Actually, I never really liked them much until I woke up one day recently and realized how great their classic bones really are and how much nicer they’d be if painted! (All the credit for that goes to you, Paige!)

The end tables look fantastic. Did you use a brush for the black pain? I really enjoy your creativity and skills.

Thank you Nancy. Yes, I paint with a brush.
