As most folks know Big Daddy had an accident at work in mid September and ruptured his Achilles. Two weeks later he actually had the surgery to repair it. Unbeknownst to us the recovery time for a completely ruptured Achilles is measured in months…… like 12 of them. Also somewhere around a month ago I injured my back. I ended up at the local Urgent Care then out of work for several days. We very quickly revamped our home and our life together and by revamped I mean simplified. And this simplified life has really been a blessing to us all. If I am being honest we had already spoken to each other about the fact that we are now living with two wild hyenas in our house and that we had no intention of sacrificing any of our ornaments that we have collected together for near 30 years.
Once my mind acclimated to The New World Order around here I was so much more relaxed and really glad for the slower pace especially around the holidays. The hard part is not being able to work on or move any furniture until my back/hip/ butt cheek heals. Y’all, it is really difficult to keep me down but I am truly trying.
Traditionally we begin to drag out our Christmas decorations the morning after Thanksgiving. But we both knew there would be no climbing up in the attic this year. And I have not missed that one bit. Keeping with our newly simplified life we have both expressed that our holidays should be simple also. Personally I am really looking forward to this change, the slower pace and simpler decor. I would love nothing better than some fresh fragrant greenery and a simple tree, maybe a pretty ribbon. So over the next several weeks I hope to be sharing some simple and natural Christmas embellishments , sort of a using what I’ve got and shopping my own back yard kinda thing. Big Daddy and I have always said that we love the sounds and smells of the holidays so here’s to that!

Oh darn it. I had not heard about your situation. Take care of yourselves and if someone offers help, take it. You can order almost anything from the internet. Grocery delivery would be a great thing.

I’m sad to hear that you are both dealing with physical pain, healing, and lack of mobility. And, I totally salute your united front in facing it head on, adjusting to the change in your holiday celebrations with grace and strength! And mostly, thank you for being open with us and sharing what you have both have been going through. To be honest, I have sort of missed your more ‘personal’ posts; your stories about “Paige days”, early morning coffee on the back patio, how much you both enjoy being snowed in. I admire your bravery in writing those posts. I am too afraid to; afraid I will simply bore people senseless. The hyenas will have puh-lenty of Christmases ahead of them where they can the bat the ornaments off the tree. I’ve lost count of how many ornaments have met their demise in our 3-cat household! Please keep us updated!

I knew about Big Daddy being on the mend, but now you had an injury too! Glad to hear that y’all are keeping it simple, sounds like wisdom to me! All that REALLY matters is that you and hubby are together and are there for each other, that is a blessing. All the other stuff will be there after y’all mend completely AND I think you will enjoy it even more than before. Take care of yourselves and enjoy the season together!

So sorry you are both compromised, but I think your simplifying approach to the holidays is great regardless of your limitations. I love a decorated space as much as the next person, but we sometimes get lost in the “stuff” and miss the more important “spirit” of the holidays. Nothing brings that sense home as quickly and effectively as simplicity – the Shakers certainly had that philosophy and there is such great beauty in their elegantly simple things. Relax, heal yourselves, and enjoy those simpler sights along with the heavenly sounds and smells of the holidays!
