A few weeks ago I was in somewhat of a furniture dry spell.
Ok that’s not exactly the truth. It became a furniture dry spell when I got it in my crazy little head that I wanted a specific piece of furniture……..and nothing else would do. There are about eight pieces of furniture that I go out of my way to keep as staples in my booth, like WAY out of my way. Nothing too exotic or really hard to find like the Lindbergh baby, just stuff I have a reputation (in really small circles) for stocking my booth with.
But it becomes a mania with me when I can’t find what I want when I want it.
Antique desks are high on that list.
That big paint smear did not phase me in the least. This desk was:
1. Pine, which I might walk through fire for.
2. Heavy and sturdy as they come.
Meredith, the lovely lady who was selling this piece was an absolute joy to meet! When the deal was done and my prize was loaded up in my Jeep we actually took a few minutes to talk design interms of my plans for the desk. And I must say she inspired me! This particular makeover took almost two weeks from pick up to moving in at my shop, which is a long time for me. Part was weather related and the rest was the weight of the desk. I had to wait for help moving it every time I went to paint a different side.
I was well worth it though:)))
I love this thing!!!
I chose General Finishes Midnight Blue chalk paint and I could not be happier. It is a deep, rick navy and really polished this piece right up in terms of style.
The top was stained with Minwax Special Walnut and sealed with GF Gel Topcoat. I struggled for just a skinny minute with that choice of stain though. That dark Midnight blue had me second guessing my stain color but this lighter walnut works very well with it.
The hardware was a No Brainer though.
Brass was the only thing that would do in my opinion with Midnight Blue. The bail pulls have begun to be my standard order from DLawless Hardware. They are less than a buck each and are solid and substantial feeling in your hand. Can’t beat that with a sick ya’ll.
For me, the knobs were a splurge.
I am usually wwwaaayyy more frugal than $4.50 per knob. Next time you are in Target go over to the Knob & Pull department and take a look at them. They are also more contemporary than I usually use but I could not get them out of my head!
Thoughts?

Your magical touch have changed the desk completely. It is entirely changed to a brand new one from an antique desk. You have managed to get this desk though it is very rarely available. I think the choice of the color for this desk was really good. The newly fitted knobs add more beauty to this desk. Anyways it is sure that this desk will be one among the most attractive things in your home.

That desk was MADE to be painted that gorgeous navy blue — I don’t care how old it is! The top turned out to be amazing – in spite of the paint. I can’t make up my mind about the drawer pulls…but they really very pretty and unique! But I can make up my mind about the navy buffalo check pillow-it’s gorgeous. And now I have more information about finishing tops – Miniwax and GF gel coat!

My daughter has a very similar desk, and if we ever decide to paint it I know just what post to look for! I love this look you have created. Thanks for sharing on To Grandma’s House We Go!
