I have never been much of a fan of Mid Century Modern design. After all I am a hardcore Leg Girl. I love a good turned leg. The curvier the better in my eyes. That has been my entire beef with MCM design. The legs aren’t any kind of show. So last year sometime I ran across a Hellofadeal on a matching pair of MCM end tables and I made a BIG exception in my albeit loose, rules of furniture buying: I bought them and took the home.
Ya’ll.
I miss this snake tail like y’all do not know.
I stayed true to that design style.
I didn’t try to make them something the were not but I did soften them with a bit with a neutral gray paint. They flew out of my shop. If memory serves I think they didn’t even make it 48 hours and they were gone. Not too long after this particular project I began to actively look for another matching pair and it immediately became clear to me that the price I paid for this matching set of MCM tables was in no way, shape or form The Norm.
Flash forward to one week ago:
Yep.
My neighborhood Goodwill once again.
$20 for the pair.
Now, those tops were a wreck.
Both had really deep scratches that I didn’t even notice until I got home with them because my eyeballs glazed over when I say that sticker price.
I gotta quit doing that!
The top are an oak veneer.
I really had to take my time with those deep scratches and gouges to make sure that I did not go right through the veneer but I managed 🙂
This is General Finishes Slate Gray chalk paint.
I love it but it is one moody color. It can look blue or green depending on the light.
It’s quite the stately color in my little opinion.
The tops were stained with Minwax Dark Walnut and after an entire afternoon of looking at replacement knobs I went right back to the antique bass original ones. No there metal finish knobs look nearly as good with the Slate.
I guess I am sort of making friends with MCM.
Nobody is more shocked than me:)

You’re AMAZING! LOVE them! After seeing your work, when ever I go thrifting I take a longer look at the furniture , I clearly do not have your gift, but wonder what amazing things you could do transforming them!

Great job, Paige. I too am not a fan of MCM but awhile back I redid a sewing cabinet that looks like the taller big brother of these tables. I did it in a pale spring green with a stained top. Love your take on these tables.

I love how dark that General Finishes Slate Gray is; it IS stately, and commanding, and looks exactly right on those tables. They look amazing – let us know how quickly they zoom out of your booth !!

I love MCM and I have to say these turned out fantastic. I may just borrow your color combination for an end table that I’ve got that has been sitting there looking at me all pitiful like.
