A few weeks ago my local Habitat For Humanity Restore had it’s twice a year 25% storewide sale. Now I have gone to these sales many times, but I can not remember leaving with much of anything at all. This Saturday wasn’t much of a success either, with the exception on this one piece,
A really nice vintage maple Kincaid night table 🙂
Looking in those drawers, this piece appeared to never been used. Those drawers are perfect. This is a complete luxury for me. Most of the time it’s the condition of the drawers ( not the price) that will keep me from taking a piece of furniture home. I’m thinking that this night table must have been kept in a guest room, it looked that good!
This beautiful blue green color may look familiar. We refer to it as The Atlantic. I concocted this color last Summer early one morning in my feety pajamas because I was craving a new, fresh color but I refused to dress in actual clothes or leave my house. You know.
I refused to Adult.
The Atlantic is a custom mix of Three General Finishes colors:
Coastal Blue
Nantucket Green
Summertime Blue
I did sand down the fairly shiny top of the night table and refinished it with Annie Sloan Dark wax. In my opinion it suits the piece well.
These beautiful hydrangea are from my sweet friend and neighbor Donna.
She brought them to me this week after we lost Emmitt, our 14 year old tomcat. It has been a painful week and I would like to express my gratitude for all of the kind comments on social media. Big Daddy and I both needed this encouragement and appreciate everyone’s kind words. Let me just say that it is just so quiet in this house and we are trying our best to adjust.
I just miss my big striped boy so very much.
In the mean time I am just trying to stay busy and not think so much which translates to I am painting a lot. It has served me well for years as form of therapy. This situation is no different.
I highly recommend it.

I’m so sorry for your loss of Emmitt. I know that right now it’s a raw ache but I hope soon that laughter will replace your tears when you think of him and his antics. Our furry children leave paw prints on our hearts forever!
Love the night stand and the color really sets it off perfectly.

Uggh…. we have 3 and the thought of losing even just one puts me in a tailspin. Their silly chatter, waving tails, goofy faces. I know that ache and emptiness and completely empathize. It’s just not a home without their fur…everywhere. I finally subscribed to your blog…have been wandering around here for the last few months. I love the style and feel of your home; it resonates even through the pictures. I think what I really appreciate is your home reflects you…not what’s trending in blogland. It is thoughtful,, genuine and relaxed. And I would kill for those botanical prints above your couch. Hugs….I am so sorry about Emmitt.

I missed the news about Emmitt, too, but I’m so very sorry for your loss. As a long-time kitty mommy, and not such a long-time – but not brand new – reader of your blog, I know how special these furry creatures are to our lives and what good company they are. I still have the last of a very long line of kitties (most all siblings, or near siblings, now gone but one) who is 18+ and will likely be my last kitty-child for a while after a lifetime of kitty motherhood. I need to take a break for a bit and travel, but I’m sure another one will find me when the time is right. I hope you will keep only the happy memories of Emmitt in your hearts forever more.
I so enjoy reading your blog and your projects which are sol appealing, and hearing about Big Daddy, and the “Hell Hole”, too. It sounds like yours are special lives – please keep sharing!

So sorry about Emmitt, I know that you miss him. Be comforted in knowing that you and Big Daddy gave him a wonderful life full of love and that Emmitt thanked you in his own feline way I am sure. Hugs to you my friend, I understand. I LOVE the “new” piece of furniture, as usual you did an excellent job!

Hi Paige,
So sorry to hear about your kitty…..all I can say is if your theraphy is working as well as your painting you should be in good shape in no time.
This is such a stunning piece of furniture, just love it and love the color, you did an outstanding job. So very pretty! and Emmit would be proud
of your lovely new chest.
Hope you and hubby will be feeling better emotionally soon. Can’t help but love our pets, they are like family.

Hi Again Paige,
Hope you are doing better…..
Was wondering if I could ask you a question about your painted night stand. Since it had a finish on it, did you sand the rest of the stand as well,
before you painted it? and did you paint it with chalk paint? I am wanting to paint my bedroom furniture but have never attempted anything like that before, and our furniture looks pretty much like the piece you have there in the oak……with a bit of the shiny finish like yours as well. We would
like to paint it white………so can you give many any directions or help? We would be ever so grateful.
Thanks so very much,
Blessings, Nellie

Good morning Nellie:)
The top I handed off completely and stained. The table tops wear better if stained sealed in my opinion. When I am painting a piece I only scuff sand it if it’s rather glossie just so the chalk paint will stick better. Allow the paint to dry and lightly sand between coats. The most important this is to use a good quality self priming and self leveling paint.

Good Morning to you….
Thanks so much for the information Paige, it was very appreciated. I have a couple of more questions if you don’t mind.
What brand of paint did you use………and what type of brush???…….as I know they have sponge brushes and rollers as well.
I love how the finish came out on yours….it was so smooth and flawless and just the look I am going for?? Also did you
seal your paint job on the blue green areas in any way??
Thanks for your help hon,
Blessings, Nellie
Bet you are really enjoying you pretty night stand, it really looks awesome………

The color is a custom color I mixed using three different paints From General Finished. Here’s a rough formula:
1 part Costal Blue
1 part Nantucket Green
1/4 part Summertime Blue
The painted body of the was sealed with Annie Sloan clear wax.
Hope this helps!
