People ask me all the time where I find my furniture.
I’m pretty sure this one found me.
Big Daddy always asks me if I remembered to take a photo of my next project in the wild.
This expression cracks me up!
He means did I grab a photo of the piece of furniture in the thrift store, yard sale or chicken coup where I first spotted it. Well this time I managed to remember. I spotted this desk from across the room at my local Habitat Restore. I am a complete sucker for little desks like these. They are so versatile. You can use them for well a desk, an entry hall piece, a buffet in a smaller dining room and if they are slim enough, as a sofa table.
Back to Habit Restore.
I actually try to run through there at least once a week. It is about a 4 minute drive from my day job which makes it super convenient but the big drawback is the pricing. There is really very little in my budget there. This particular piece was $49 which was a lot for me ……… so I jumped on it. I might have hesitated a bit longer if not for all of that original hardware. I rarely get this lucky y’all.
I love me some Hepplwhite!!!
This desk was in pretty good shape, as things that I drag home go. The top was the worst of it. I never concern myself with that because I know I can breathe life right back in to that desk top with my orbital sander and some 80 grit sanding disks.
See?
I have begun to paint the edge of a few of my furniture pieces as opposed to sanding and refinishing them. It started with that Duck Egg desk that I got from an old high school friend about a month ago.
It’s a tedious process but I love the effect.
The curve of the front of this desk sucked me in immediately. It is very feminine to me even in this masculine color. For this project I chose General Finishes Empire Gray. It is what I would call a putty gray. In my opinion gray either pull blue or brown. GF Empire Gray pulls brown, if that makes any sense.
I didn’t touch these pulls at all.
I love that patina.
I love the composition in the picture.
Antique desk, antique books and a fairly elegant lamp with a burlap shade.
The lamp is another thrifted find. It was my first score (for $7!) the same day I found the desk. I was a dark green and I painted over it with two coats of General Finishes Bone white.
This little guy’s face is so sweet 🙂
Except for the $10 burlap lampshade from Ross, everything you see in this photo was thrifted 🙂
There is another one of these desks at my neighborhood Goodwill right now that I am currently stalking. It is in worse shape for more money that I paid for this one.
Go figure.
I really do love the details on this one :)))

The piece really turned out fantastic. I would never have thought about staining the top but it looks great. The gray paint really highlights the decorative embellishments.

This is a beautiful desk – I love the curve to it. I didn’t even notice the little 3D architectural details at the top until I looked at the photo of it painted. And I am glad you didn’t change the hardware in any way, those pulls are so classic. Thank you for sharing that you used General Finishes in Bone White chalk paint. I am hoping to paint a chest in a chalk paint, and I think I will go with General Finishes. And the bone white is in the color range I am considering. Visiting from Silver Pennies link party today.
