Last Spring I found this on a lunch hour stroll through Habitat Restore:
The top had issues.
I knew that going in. It is a well known fact that I hate veneer. It is also a well known fact that I love me some 1920’s furniture. So when I found this buffet at a pretty decent price I made a split second decision to buy it.
And then it spent nearly a year in The Hell Hole. That’s how intimidated I was by the top of this buffet. Then last weekend we we spent hours clean THH out and I finally had to put on my Big Girl Panties……….First I sanded down that top as carefully as I could and accessed the missing veneer Vs. loose veneer situation. Unfortunately I did manage to pop off several bits of that damn veneer that was splintered. I used wood glue (and a brick!) to reattach the looses veneer along the front edge.
I really new better than to bring this thing home. I did. Alas, I am a HEAD HEAD. My neighbor Chris has an expression. He’s says, ” If you are going to have a hard head, you had better have a hard ass.” In my case, it’s feet. As I am sitting here in front of the fire I glanced at my bare feet. My feet and toes are dotted with small bruises. If you are going to go barefoot most of the time, you had better have tough toes. If I am going to drag home junk continuously, I better learn to love imperfection.
OK.
Loves…….I gave up perfect years ago.
Perfect is exhausting.
Giving it up was liberating.
In my crazy little green eyes this buffet is lovely.
Lovely and timeworn and substantial.
I love the curves on the backsplash.
Minimal distressing on this one.
The corrugated zinc vase is new and it is fast becoming my favorite vessel to put my grocery store flowers in. The zinc doesn’t compete with the flowers at all. Plus I am almost positive I can chill a bottle of wine in it out on the porch or deck this Summer:)))

I am soooooo in love with these knobs!!!!!
I found them at Hobby Lobby for $2 each and I think it is safe to say this will not be the last time I use them. They go so well with the paint I chose for this buffet. I used General Finishes Bone White chalk paint. This is my 8th buffet project and I have only used two colors on all eight.
White or Aqua.
Ya’ll know that the knobs at Hobby Lobby are 50% off every other week, right? The pictures of this knob on their website do not at all do this knob justice.
They are darling!
Lord…..these legs!

Another beautiful job! I am convinced that your talent for restoration of furniture goes deeper! Restoration does not mean that a thing or person for that matter can be put back to its original form; but restoration means that someone cares enough to give back the dignity, esteem, importance and “beauty” to a person or thing, that was lost through time and trial. That is what God can do for us and it is a precious gift and talent that He has given to you…to see beyond the broken, scratched, busted up pieces and see a thing of beauty…that’s what you do alright. 🙂 Just want to encourage you today 🙂 keep up the good work, your pieces always come out looking gorgeous! I am always excited to see the next one!

Thanks for sharing the imperfections! Love how you keep things real. Nothing hangs around decade after decade and comes out unscathed… furniture or people.
I plan to take your advice and run to Walmart today for those hydrangeas ; )

First of all…perfect is highly overrated. Nothing stays perfect forever. Spend $2000 on a buffet and first time someone drags a plate across it, it is scratched and imperfect. Why not have a ‘love/hate affair’ with something 100 years old with classic lines and great bones. You did a fabulous job on this piece. Storage and serviceability and bring on those scratches, flaws, and the character that says—“I have been used, and loved, and polished, and a witness to family and friends in good times and bad.”

Have to say I agree with all very body before me has said about this wonderful buffet. You certainly did do a great job on it. I would buy if I had the cash and it was available to me and I am fussy. Love that style with the stained top and white paint. You did that piece proud.
After all these years of seeing old pieces redone on blogland I have no interest in new, to me older pieces refurbished are so much more attractive to me. My home has character and interest with our old pieces, I enjoy them so much more..
Enjoy rest of week

I have an old buffet that we have had for years. It has moved around the house to different areas, and is now being used as an entertainment. But in all of its moving, I have never gotten around to refinishing it. But you have inspired me, and I will be pinning this for later!
