Lord.
Sometime I amaze myself at what a Dingbat I actually am.
This is one of those times, BTW…….
I seriously loose my mind in a good paint department. Like Lowes. I just stand there, my eyes glazed over, a dab of drool in the corner of my mouth….. you get the idea. The colors hypnotize me. And eight and a half times outa ten I go as straight for the blues as I can go.
This color.
It makes my nuts!
So I came outa there with one of those sample pots of this paint and I made a Bee line for The Michaels store to pick up some plaster of paris. I was damned and determined to make this DIY chalk paint work with this unbelievable shade of blue.
It was an unmitigated wreck of a project. I had to throw away one of my brushes, if that tells you anything:(((((. I mixed a tablespoon on POP with the entire sample pot and shook and shook and shook till my arms fell off. I can’t for the life of me figure out how anybody gets good results with this method. It was a lumpy mess.
The only thing I could think of that might salvage my project was to
A. Thin the mess down with some water.
B. Sand the daylights out of what I had already done.
It’s cute.
Not at all worth the mess, but cute.
I picked this little stool/table up last Summer at a church rummage sale for $3.
Legs will hook me in every time. The sanding was also a huge mess but it really did work miracles.
This is an old photo of my Mama and all of her brothers and sisters. My Mama is the girl in the middle of the back row . My aunt Wanda is the baby to her right . My aunt Carolyn is third from the right on the front row. She and my uncle Mike gave me this photo.
It is sooooo precious to me.
This is the second time I have tried to DIY chalk paint and I am really ready to admit defeat. There is a reason this stuff is not cheap to purchase 🙂
I do love this color though!

What a beautiful color. I am sorry you are having such a time with homemade chalk paint. I have had bad experiences also. Two things I discovered is not all paint samples are created equal. I only buy samples from Sherwin Williams and for a really smooth mixture, I use Poppie’s Paint Powder instead of POP.

I am so there with you on the homemade DIY chalk paint. Mixing plaster into a laytex base just defeats the purpose of a chalk based or mineral paint to me. And one needs to be extra careful not to breath in the dust when mixing up your own concoctions too. Thanks for sharing your experience at #FridaysFurnitureFix!

I prefer to use milk paint, but sometimes you just want to use regular latex paint with a chalky finish. If you want to try it one more time: I’ve always mixed the POP with water BEFORE adding it to one cup of paint. The POP/water mixture should be the consistancy of icing/frosting. Then you mix it with your latex paint really, really well … adding more water if you feel it’s too thick. I’ve never had it fail, but that said, if I plan on selling a piece, I always use proper furniture paint because I want to be assured that the finish will last.
Sorry to read you had trouble, but your table is super cute! 😀
