Let me just say right now……..I ain’t no expert on Milk Paint.
Let me also say right now that I was afraid of this stuff for a long time.
Why?
I am a Control Freak. And Milk Paint is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get.
Today’s victim:
This little side table has been in my living room for over a year now. I have thought about painting it several times but for whatever reason (probably ADD) I never have, until this morning 🙂
Big Daddy asks me all the time why don’t I use Milk Paint more often, except he doesn’t say it quite so nicely. The actual quote goes more like this,
‘When you gonna use that crap that pops off???’
I cleaned it up a bit for ya’ll.
So this morning about 6:45 I took him up on it and dug around in my stash to find some.
One of the things I was afraid of was mixing my own paint. The first couple of times I used Milk Paint I mixed the powdered paint with cold water in a bowl with a small fork. It was a mess! All lumpy and runny. Shortly thereafter I figured out that if I used warm water and shook it in a screw top jar AND let it sit with the lid off for 20 minutes or so……… it was MUCH smoother and no lumps!
So here’s that little table after two coats of Miss Mustard Seed Milk Paint and about an hour drying time:
Yea. The chipping is completely random.
That was the thing I was afraid of MOST.
Oh & PS: I SO DO NOT recommend doing all the in your kitchen. It is messy as hell.
I took a soft paintbrush and went over the entire table to brush away all of the chips. I sanded the top ever so lightly with fine sandpaper and brushed down the piece once more. To seal the table I used Hemp oil, MMS’s standard method for protecting the finish of her Milk Painted pieces.
This is what I got!!!!!
Big Daddy will be sooooo proud when he gets home tonight!
This is about the fifth color that I have tried in Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint line. Ironstone is a lovely, warm white. The closest MMS Milk paint dealer is almost 45 minutes north of my house. On days when I’ve really got my act together, the paint is waiting on my doorstep for me!

Your table turned out great! Makes me think I ought to paint my round mahogany table when it gets out of storage and moved from CA to TX later this year. Thanks for a great tutorial and the tip about mixing with warm water and in a mason jar! Definitely will do it! 🙂
