Oooooo, how patient I have been.
I have very quietly bided my time. I have spent countless hours on Craigslist with a single word in the search box:
Buffet
Ok, so I told you that to tell you this. About a month ago I was out at my Mama’s house spending the weekend with my Dad. We were all settled in on Friday night, both of us in our feety pajamas watching a Braves game when I ran across this on Craigslist:
Well at least somebody did a lot of the hard work for me!
And I just about fell off the couch.
A 1920 Buffet that I might actually be able to afford!
During the back and forth texting between myself and the seller, the exchange between me and my Dad was priceless! The first few times my cellphone trilled he would just look my way then back to that Braves game. Finally he asked,
‘ What’s that?
What are we doing?’
‘Negotiating’ I answered
A few more trills later my Dad muted the game on the TV and asked,
‘Do we have it?’
‘Right where we want it.’
I replied 🙂
My dad was so proud. My entire life I will never forget this moment 🙂
Two days later he went with me to pick up that buffet, just incase the seller was an axe murderer. Alas, he was not. He was a very nice guy who helped me load the HUGE thing in to my Jeep while my Dad supervised of course.
The very first thing I did was sand the rest of the finish off the top and address those two white patch jobs. I actually took my orbital to them and they looked much better
The top had just enough flaws to make it interesting and refinished perfectly.
Well, perfectly for me anyway:)
I used two coats of Annie Sloan dark wax on the top and it settled in to all of those imperfections.
I love it when that happens!
The color was a no brainier.
I love a good Aqua buffet.
This one had a more substantial back piece than any other one that I’ve ever refinished. It had a pretty prominent profile so I made the decision to just go with it and not try to make it blend with the natural top
From the back piece alone one might think I went with a milk paint but this is actually Annie Sloan Chalk paint in Duck Egg. I just make good use of my sandpaper.
Lord, I agonized over the hardware on this one. The piece came with all of the original pulls but I felt like they were truly undersized for the scale of this buffet.
I finally decided on these wrought iron ones from Hobby Lobby. It seems as though their knob and pulls are perpetually 50% off so these were $2.50
each.
Not bad at all.
Plus I LOVE that backplate!
Honest to God, I could not be happier with how pretty this top came out.
The white pumpkin tureen was a birthday gift from my sweet husband a couple of years ago. A thrifted cake stand is underneath it. The dried hydrangea I collected all Summer from my Mama’s
I’m really do love this buffet.
This one is gonna hurt.
