In October, two days after we got home from Mexico Big Daddy moved me in to my shop at Sweeten Creek Antiques. That exact same Saturday afternoon he hauled this home and helped me load it in to our garage, in an absolute monsoon!
I found this HUGE, HEAVY antique desk at the South Asheville Salvation Army. I thinks I paid $30 for it but I’m not absolutely sure about that. What I am absolutely sure about is that I fell HARD in love with this thing upon sight. I mean look at the legs!
It did have some issues.
The top almost came off when we were loading it in to Big Daddy’s truck, two drawer fronts came off and that top was a big old MESS. So last weekend, six months later I got serious about it and got to work.
There was very little original finish left so it sanded off pretty quickly leaving beautiful wood (mahogany ??) underneath.
From the second I spotted this desk I felt like it was a completely masculine piece of furniture and I wanted it to have a masculin paint color.
So I chose to paint it black.
It came with really cool hardware that fit my vision of this desk so I ended up keeping it .
On either side are two pullouts for extra work space. I refinished those as well.
Big Daddy really wants to keep it! He loves this desk but we have no where to put it in this house. Plus, after two years and a month I’m ready to have my half of the garage back. The stacks and clutter is beginning to get under my skin.
Alas, the big masculine is already advertised for sale.
If memory serves, in the past two years and one month this is my eleventh desk makeover.
I just love them.
But I am a bit tired of tripping over them with an armload of groceries.
Just sayin’.

Don't blame your hubs for wanting to keep that desk, very handsome piece and painted black, oh my, how snazzy. You did great job, looks gorgeous. Wish we could find pieces like that here (western CO, Grand Junction). If we did would be way too expensive. Too many things here are over inflated like they're made of gold. Have great rest of week/weekend.

I love this! This desk is the perfect example of how great, old wood furniture can be given a completely new lease on life with little effort. The refinished top looks amazing–I'm so glad you went that route and didn't paint the whole thing! I think the black is the perfect base color also. Great job! You will be one of my feature picks for next week's Friday's Furniture Fix!

Oh my gosh what a stunner! I love that you left the top natural, the paint color you chose really lets that wood shine.

Gorgeous! How did you finish the top?

Annie Sloan Dark a Wax, no stain at all. Then I sealed it with a coat is her clear wax.
