A couple of weeks ago I had mentioned in a blog post that I was headed to the Charlotte Ikea store to get something I’d been eyeing for a year.
The Ektorp loveseat
Is there a simpler, more classic design anywhere?
One year ago I made a deal with the Devil (you guys know him as Big Daddy) to ride 2+ hours down to Charlotte NC to the HUGE Ikea store if I would, in turn go to a HUGE . . .
vintage guitar show.
Yep, I married a guitar player.
Don’t judge me.
Anyway, that was the very first time I ever laid eyes on this lovely couch, and untill yesterday I wished I never had. So a couple of weeks ago my Aunt Wanda agreed to be my partner in crime for a day and road down with me to shop in Charlotte and ultimately bring home that couch.
Let me first say we had an absolute ball that day! Our first stop was in Gastonia at the best fabric store known to man.
Mary Jo’s
Meet Aunt Wanda!
She’s holding up one of the fabrics I was considering for the revamp of our living room.
This place is unbelievable! If you are looking for decor fabric and you can’t find it here, then they do not make it.
From there it was on to Ikea.
Aunt Wanda had never been in one so she was totally amazed! We strolled through the entire store and then spent some time just sitting on the Ektorp loveseat floor model to be sure it was comfortable.
Now this joint is self serve and the show as we began to wrestle the HUGE box the loveseat comes in on to the TINY cart they offer you was like a circus act. With help from a very nice employee, we managed. Little did I know at the time this was the absolute least of our problems.
IT. WOULDN’T. FIT. IN. MY.JEEP.
I had to return it on the spot.
Had we not been having such a good time just spending the day together, I would have cried.
Fact
So I got back home with a really nice slipcover for a sofa that I didn’t even own. The cold hard stare from Big Daddy was priceless!
All that changed yesterday, no deals required this time.
And it still did not fit,
even in Big Daddy’s big ol’ SUV!
So here we are on the loading dock at Ikea Charlotte cutting open this huge box and loading everything into the back of the car! I bet it was some kinda show. We probable looked and sounded like a couple of monkeys!!!
I was so excited I could not stand myself! I didn’t stop talking the entire way home.
Now, I have to say Big Daddy was VERY skeptical about putting this thing together. He kept looking at me like, ‘What kinda crap have you brought home now???’.
It went together like a dream.
Easy and quickly. He was impressed. So was I !
Here are a couple of pictures until I can finish the room, or at least get all my curtain panels up! That red is way too loud right now.
I took the pillows off our bed and love the black on it!
They may not go back either.
Hope y’all’s week is an easy one,
Paige

Every time I go to IKEA at least one person is wrestling with a big box so it wasn't just you! I bought 2 sitting chairs there and couldn't get them to fit i the car so my sister had to sit squished in between pieces. Thankfully we only live 15 minutes away! Glad you finally got it home 🙂

Oh Paige, I have wanted that love seat or the sofa for so long!!! I live in Indiana and Ikea is in Ohio! I want to go there to get it so that is the delay! I do not want to pay the shipping. I really want the sofa so I guess I will have to take a truck if my dream comes true. Love your loveseat!

I did not want to pay the shipping either. It defeats the purpose of a good deal !!

Love it! I'm in the market for a new sofa and have been seriously considered the Ektorp. Thanks for the heads up on getting it into the vehicle; do you think the box would go on top of my Toyota Highlander if we took lots of ropes/bungee cords? Seeing the love seat in your home has helped me make the decision that this is the way I want to go. Thanks! (Saw your link at Cozy Little House.)

Yes, it would. But it would be way easier to just do what we did. The loveseat box is 79 inches long

I have had my Ektorp sofa for 5 1/2 years and really love it. I even purchased an extra slipcover so I would not have to wash it the same day I removed cover. (I am 80 years old and live alone still) Had always wanted a white slipcovered couch so finally got to have one when I moved to retirement community. It is quite comfortable and slipcovers easy to launder but I found when drying if left slightly damp they turn out not as wrinkled. If too many wrinkles I just use my little steamer and quickly makes it nice.

Paige…..I really had to laugh at your escapade!. We live right between 2 Ikeas….one in Tampa, on in Orlando (my prefered place to shop). So far I have brought home 2 full size beds, a daybed and the Ektorp sofa – all in their boxes with my trunk tied down – in my Chevy Impala. The back seat folds down to make what I call a lady's truck. Once I even fit an 8' skinny Christmas tree in it's box and closed the trunk! We also bought a queen size bed and a number of mattresses in hubby's E250 van. Where there's a will…..there's a way…lol.
As for the sofa coming in pieces, my retired builder hubby was very impressed with the quality of the construction materials and the assembly of the sofa. When he's happy with a product, it's a good one.

Haha! Paige, this is so funny!
I have 2 of those sofas and had to take one them out of the box too!
The white looks beautiful!

I loved the narration of this story of your trip to ikea! We recently got a new microwave/oven combo and were determined to bring it home ourselves and install it (and save the $500 delivery fee)… Got our van over there. Gasp! It didn't fit! So we too, were desperately cutting it out of its box… Made it! Whew! Your new couch is beautiful, I wish upon the stars no one spills on your white couch!

I just love these. The love seat looks so comfortable. I purchased the sofa a few weeks ago. And I couldn't believe how easy it was to put together.
