DIY chalk paint.
I don’t know about this stuff. I’ve read a go-zillion recipes and tutorials/testimonials that use everything from baking soda to dirt as their secret ingredient and up until now I was not really sure why anyone would want to try it. Then I figured it out. For me, it boiled down to color.
I was in search of the perfect Navy. Having purchased SEVERAL blues that were just too well, BLUE I decided to bite the bullet and chose the Calcium Carbonate Recipe.

Christy James really knows her stuff when it comes to furniture painting so I chose her recipe and followed her affiliated link to Amazon to order my Calcium Carbonate . . .
in the convenient Economy Size.
Five pounds for $11
And free shipping!
I was so pleased with myself!
About half an hour later while I was doing my housework, the house phone rang. I could tell from the Caller ID that it was Big Daddy’s work number. The conversation went:
‘Hey Love, how’s it going? How’s you day? Are you cleaning my house? How are the cats? Yea? Good. So. Let me just ask you . . . Are you making a BOMB???’
What in the world???
He repeated the question, noticeably louder!
Me: ‘No! . . . . Why????’
Him: ‘Well, then WE have a problem because Amazon just sent me a notification that my 5 pounds of Sodium Phosphate is on it’s way!’
Lord.
He be crazy!
This one was hard to explain to him.
When the package came in the mail it had a nice little Thank You note, in beautiful curvy girly hadwriting to Big Daddy from someone named Kristin.
His response?
‘Great. Now I’m on a list somewhere! Thanks Paige.’
So for my Perfect Navy I wanted Benjamin Moore Hale Navy, but I did not want the price tag that went with it. I took my BM paint chip to the very nice people at the South Asheville Lowes and they fixed me right up!
It is a glorious color, isn’t it?
I followed the directions VERY carefully and mixed the dissolved Calcium Carbinate in to one cup of the latex paint.
It goes straight to the bottom, which I think is interesting. Next I stirred like crazy!
And here’s what I’ve got so far
This is a photo of a little maple desk I’m working on. I LOVE this color! But I’m still unsure about the chalk part of this little experiment. I’ll be back in a day or two with the results.
I guess time will tell.
Have a great Saturday!
Paige

I've always wanted to try chalk paint. I must be the last person on the planet to say that! Can't wait for your results. And by the way, blue is my favorite color!

I have also made my own chalk paint, but I used Plaster of Paris. I was really pleased with the results too. I shop around Lowes and Home Depot for quarts of mistint paints(cheap!) and hope to find a color I can work with. Can't wait to see how yours turns out!

Hi, I use both calcium carbonate and plaster of paris and mix it in an old blender no lumps . Post easily into any old plastic container. Works great Kris
