Let me just start out by saying this one just about kicked my butt. I think I painted this thing three times, for crying tears in a bucket!
But I think I got it right
Oh Provence, how I love you! If ever a color could elevate something, this is most surely the one. But I assure y’all it did not start out that way.
Not at all
Somebody had handled this thing rough, to say the very least.
I bought this dresser on a local Facebook yard sale page based on a crappy cellphone photo. Then I drove to the Back Of Beyond to pick it up! The cool part was that it did not require any structural repair, so I did catch a break in that department.
The top is a veneer that I sanded down very carefully. It was in pretty good shape ( no big gouges ) there was just no finish left and it had water marks. The only thing I used for the new finish is Annie Sloan Dark Wax.
I had the color picked out before I ever went to pick the dresser up. The next morning I got up around seven, put on a pot of coffee (vanilla) and painted my little heart out!
Yeah, my Big Mug and my penguin feety pajamas. It does not get ANY sexier than that.
And here is what I got for my efforts
A mess.
A big, flippin’ BLUE mess! Good God, it was awfull! I almost cried, but Big Daddy was not home to pet me so I had to be a Big Girl and preserver. I really don’t like to be an adult sometimes.
I waited a few hours and painted a second coat that went MUCH better ! I really should have primed this big RED mess of a dresser. I’ve never seen anything bleed through Annie Sloan chalk paint.
I thought with all that fluted detail on the sides of this piece that dark wax was the way to go. Well, the more I waxed the GREENER the dresser got. Now I cried, out in the garage on a rainy night, and I threw in the towel.
For three weeks
I let it sit out in the garage until
I had my heart and head right with this piece. Then I painted coat #3 and it was a beautiful turquoise again!
Was it worth it?
Well, no. But I learned ALOT about what not to do on a red mahogany anything, ever again.
Lastly, let’s talk about this hardware. As a rule, I do not like Early American hardware but theses sure cool!
It’s rusted, I guess by accident? Either way I love it!
I’m a little in love with this piece.
Big Daddy always says the same thing when I sell something he thinks is beautiful.
“How can you sell this?”
This one will be hard.

Paige, it turned out beautiful! I have a huge, red mahogany buffet sitting in my garage, waiting for me to paint it. I'm so afraid of bleed through, that it just sits there. What did you do about the bleed through on this piece? I'm wondering if I should just spray shellac the whole thing before I even start painting it? I would so appreciate hearing about what to do/not do when I finally get up the courage to begin painting my piece. Thanks! Linda

I would definitely spay it! I wish I had, the second coat of chalk paint was better but the dark wax really sealed it.

Oh this turned out fabulous !
You've never had bleed through with ASCP? It's the only paint I use and I've had it quite often – usually with mahogany pieces – you have to shellac the piece to " seal " the bleeding or it will eventually come through again ( it's the bain of my existence – just went through it with a piece for a client ! )
I LOVE the rusted handles – talk about perfection – turquoise and rust – it doesn't get much better 🙂
Gorgeous job
( and I like your pj's ! )

It's gorgeous! I have a crap load of batwing pulls in my stash because I don't like them and always remove them from my pieces. But wowsers am I loving them all rusted out like yours. My stash is getting rusted real soon! LOL Yup, mahogany can be a nasty beast. I ALWAYS apply 1-2 coats of shellac first and then you're guaranteed no bleed through. I love the pretty turquoise with the dark stained top and those rusty pulls are the icing on the cake! Beautiful makeover!

This turned out fantastic! All of the work paid off. I agree with you about the Chippendale pulls. I usually find them ugly, but they look great on this dresser. I really hope you didn't get any paint on your penguin pajamas! They are so cute. Great job.

Oh wow! The paint makes such a difference! I think it was worth it, even though you had to give it three layers. It looks brand new – beautiful!

Wow, that dresser is gorgeous and painted in my favorite color. It is amazing how you transformed the top of it. I love that look too….paint on the bottom and the wood top. Just put a really high price on it….kinda justifies not wanting to sell it! 🙂

I did! I really want it to go to someone who really loves it. Thank you for the compliment!
