I have said this before and now I’m gonna say it again.
FREE is my favorite four letter word!
Well, Big Daddy would disagree but let’s carry on . . . .
I have three main sources for my Freebies:
1. Craig’s List
(listed under For Sale is a Free category)
2. Facebook
(We have two local Everything’s Free pages in Asheville NC)
3. The side of the road
(On trash pick up day or not)
Number three is my personal favorite.
A word to the wise though, smell it BEFORE you load it into your Jeep.
Just sayin’.
Onward.
I was flipping through my local FB Yardsale pages around Christmas when I found this listed for free.
Could be cute, I thought.
The top was pretty rough and yes that is a hole and bubbled up veneer in the upper right corner.
Alas, I could not get past that word.
FREE.
So the nice man met me at my local grocery store and loaded it in the back of my Jeep. Since I knew I would not be doing any painting over the Holidays, I put it directly into storage.
Four and a half months later I remembered it! The only thing that made me remember it was a box that came in the mail with a lovely dark blue paint in it .
I painted this drawer front about two hours before my bedtime the night before we left for the coast of South Carolina. I simply could not stand walking past that little jewel toned jar of paint sitting on my kitchen counter one more time!
So I cracked it open.
And I was in it up to my neck.
Not only do I love this color, I love this paint! It is called Winter Lake and it is from a little company in California called Urban Rooster.
And it is Good Stuff!
The paint got to cure for a week while we were gone to the coast. When we got home I started back working on it as soon as our car was cleaned out. I had been plotting and planning all week about what I wanted to do with it!
Here’s what I used:
I’m going to stop y’all right here.
If you are a perfectionist, this is NOT the project for you. If you are mega impatient, you also need to pass on this one.
It took me one hour to tape this little thing off. And I can promise you it ain’t perfect.
Then I pealed off the blue painters tape down the middle and left the Frog Tape.
And I went to town with AH Selznick Grey.
Everything that I could find about striping a piece of furniture on the net said to pull off the tape before the paint dries, so I did.
And it worked great !
Next came the hardware. It had heavy, big brass pulls on it when I brought it home and I tossed them in the garbage as soon as I took them off.
OK, this is how my crazy little mind works: this little table was FREE. This girl ain’t gonna spend a bunch of money on hardware.
Enter this
$1.29/ yard woven burlap trim from Hobby Lobby. . . And Big Daddy’s needle nose pliers equels this:
Note the blue tape wrapped around the end of the cording and rolled to a point. The cord was larger in diameter than the hardware holes in the drawer. That little bit of tape allowed me to grab it with the pliers and pull it through to knot it on the back side. Oh, PS. I only used a yard of the cording.
Then I went at it with the medium grit sandpaper.
And the rest is sitting on my front porch!
If I were keeping this one I would love to add our house numbers to one of the drawers!
This one was fun!!!
Paige
