Personally, I like to let a room evolve.
In terms of decor I prefer a “collected” look. In other words, not like a whole matchie-matchie, pre-fab grouping that was purchased at big furniture store, right down to the lamps and throw pillows.
Why?
Well for one thing, what fun would that be? And for another thing it’s a gob of money all at once and then you are stuck with it. Having said this, my whole “letting a room evolve” theory drives Big Daddy to drink.
Case in point, our newly painted dining room walls. They are way too bare to suit him. And you know me. I ain’t about to run out and throw money and stuff that I do not love up on those lovely gray walls.
I wanted to try to use things we already had.
I wanted white plates.
LOTS OF THEM
And oh, what a statement they make!
The only things I had to purchase to put this look together was three extra plate hangers at Walmart for about $6.50.
Fact.
All of these plates have a special meaning to me.
The tiny saucers are part of our everyday dishes.
They area a Mikasa Italian Counteyside knockoff.
The large fruit patterned platter was a gift.
The medium oval platter I found in a Kroger while we were on vacation one Fall. It was part of a set of Christmas dishes.
I wish I had gotten the plates as well.
The tiny platter at the very went with the first gravy boat we ever owned.
The two cake plates I found at TJ Maxx when we first moved in this house, 15 years ago.
So see, if I hate this in two weeks all I’m out is $6.50, some spackle, and an hour home alone while Big Daddy was at a late meeting.
But I think I will love it for a long, long time. This is far from perfect, but it is perfect for me and my home.
Have an amazing weekend!
I sure plan on it.

White plates on a newly-painted gray wall…what could be more beautiful? I collect white ironstone and was drawn to your post immediately from Savvy Southern Style's Wednesday party. I so agree with you about letting rooms evolve over time as items are collected….so much better than that "furniture store" look. Your room is absolutely beautiful in its color and simplicity. Nice job!
