ÏIn May 2014 I started a small vintage decor & accessory business with my sweet friend Lisa. We specialize in painted furniture, chalkboards, lamps & pillows! Big shock! All though we didn’t have our first sale until the first of August, I began to sell things immediately. And I loved it! Every time I backed in my driveway it was like I turned on the vacancy sign. I guess that was a signal to my neighbors that I had found something cool, sometimes on the side of the road!
Case in point: this desk!
I could not believe my luck! This thing was solid maple with all hardware intact! It had a few problems but it did not stink. I was thrilled! My husband thought I was insane. What’s new? First the problems, one was structural. The back left corner of the top was coming off when we first started to lift it in to my Jeep. My heart sank. My husband was reassuring, “just a screw and a brace. Probably.” He was right. There was also a cigarette burn in the top. Since the burl on the desk top was AMAZING I made the decision to sand & refinish it on the spot.
I am an enthusiastic Chalk Paint user but I am not married to one single brand. All things being equal, I go for the color. And what I call a “good black” to me is hard to find. I knew I wanted a good black as a Basic in my bag of paint tricks ( it’s a box, actually). I chose Amy Howard black and I could not be happier!
So far so good! I picked up two painted china knobs at Hobby Lobby on clearance for $1.29 each. The knob also had a cool brass backplate that looked great with the original traditional bass pulls. The top turned out beautiful and it went in our 2junkchick Fall Sale in October.
The desk was purchased by a precious couple who relocated here in western North Carolina from the Seattle Washington area. I think it got a good home & they got a stylish entry table! Those lamps? I’m getting to that!
