II have been craving a change in our bedroom for a while now. Probably for a couple of years, now that I think about it. Our bedroom has been almost exactly the same for the entire 15 years that Big Daddy and I have lived in this particular house.
Black and cream.
And I’ve loved it for all these years.
It’s timeless, classic and peaceful. All of the qualities you would want in a Master bedroom. I have thought about adding some color (or A color ) off and on over the years and then I wake up one morning in this calm and peaceful place and forget all about it.
Big Daddy was in Atlanta this weekend and I had the joint all to myself, so I did what I do:
Clean like a maniac.
And I mean Deep Clean, which hadn’t been done in God knows when. I would tell you how many times I emptied my canister vacuum cleaner except for the fact that I’m embarrassed to admit it.
That’s between me, these two cats and the Big Man upstairs.
As I was attempting to commit suicide via housework ( I do not recommend it. It is slow and painful) I began to think about how nice it would be to refresh our bedroom with just a few simple and inexpensive (with any luck at all) changes. So when I was finished working I hopped in to my Jeep and headed out to find some inspiration. I was headed straight for TJMaxx when I decided to go the back way and skip the Tunnel Road traffic. As I sat at the I240 off ramp I saw a huge sign for Hancock Fabrics that read, and I quote:
STORE CLOSING!
I am crapping y’all negative.
Everything in the store was 20% off the lowest ticketed price and next week it will drop further. So I headed straight back to the decor fabric and found my inspiration.
This stuff had me at Hello.
It was not at ALL a deal of any kind at $29/ yard. But I marched right up to the cutting table with my eyes glazed over and enthusiastically asked for two yards of this stuff . Then I high tailed it to TJ Maxx with my fabric tucked in my purse
and walked out with this and one more small lovely thing that I’ll get to in a moment.
Here’s what I did with it all:
When Big Daddy is not home these two monkeys stick to me like Velcro. I had to pick them up to make the bed!
If I ever had any reservations/guilt about the money I spent on this gorgeous linen fabric it is gone now. I am stone, cold in love with it.
And I think putting this fabric over anything other than a down insert would have been some kinda sin. Which is good for me because the black taffeta pillows I recovered for this project were down filled.
I just love this quilt!
I took a nap under it this afternoon and it’s weight is perfect. When I first started playing around in my head with adding a color to our bedroom, it was always navy.
I had a professor in college who had a saying, ‘First mind is best mind.’
In this case it definitely was.
How cute are these little pompoms? The second thing Big Daddy said when he got home was, ‘Those are nothing but a cat toy!’ Well, maybe when they were younger. So far , so good.
And that other small thing?
OK, it’s a sugar bowl but for me it corrals all of the tiny stuff on my bedside table that DO become cat toys:
Chapstick, ear plugs, change
You get the idea.
Plus, I have a thing for Transferware. Up until yesterday it was just black Transferware.
To add a bit more of the dark blue color I did go through all of our antique and vintage books and pull out all of the ones that I thought would compliment the new bedding.
Lastly, I swapped out the antique chair in our bedroom for a parsons chair in our guest room.
The chair was a $15 Facebook yard sale find a little over a year ago. When I brought it home it was red and tan ticking striped. I had it recovered in a tan herringbone tweed. I want to paint the legs but I’ve never settled on a color.
Any opinions on that?
Evertbody’s happy with the changes around here. Even Big Daddy likes it 🙂
Thanks for stopping by to check out my master bedroom refresh! Let’s hope this will jump start something for another room in my house!
Have a great week,
Paige

I love the changes you've made!
Have you thought about changing
the wall color? I think your
headboard, lamps and art would
pop with a lighter color, say
some version of white or gray,
or robin's egg blue? It would
be nice with the white trim. Just
a thought. Love your blog! : )

It seems we are sort of neighbors! I live in Burnsville. I was shocked to see that same sign last Saturday when I stopped by Hancock Fabrics while running errands in Asheville. I, too purchased some of the decor fabric and actually looked at the piece you purchased before passing it up for a piece of a neutral paisley. 20% off is not such a great buy, especially since they are no longer accepting the coupons I just received in the mail. But, still, I hate to miss out on a piece of beautiful fabric that might be gone on my next visit. I am sad that the store is closing. It doesn't leave us many options for fabric.

I love your old bedroom. I love your new bedroom! I bet much of your cleaning involved massive amts. of cat hair. I have 4 kitties, & lots of my cleaning involves cat hair. Thanks

Nice changes. What do you think about painting the legs of your chair a dark navy? I also think the walls would be nice in a light grey or pale blue that would compliment the blue things you have added. Of course, that's a big project that you may not want to tackle right now. Overall, though, I like the changes you made. I especially like that little transferware sugar bowl! A sweet touch.

Thumbs up from me! Love, love, love that linen fabric. I would have scooped that up too. Your new look for your bed is great. Love blue and white!

Love all the blue! I'm still waiting for the prices to fall a little more before I venture into Hancock's, I'm sure I will walk out with a stack of fabric! Thanks for sharing at the Talented Tuesday Link Party!
